Setting and props

The setting / location play an important part in film making not just background. the sets used are either built from scratch or a deal of time is spent finding the right location, some locations can be edited to fit more with the movie.

The props used also add to the scene / whole movie together, and can be used to indicate the time the movie was set in. audiences might expect to see certain propes with the genre like blood, killer mask or knife in horror or laser guns and space suits in sci-fi.

Costume, Hair and Make-up

This can be used to reflect a characters personality, feeling, job, culture or status. It can also be used to indicate the time period the movies was set. 

facial expressions and body language

This is how a character expresses their emotion and what they are trying to communicate to the audience. it can also indicate what they are feeling towards another character.

Positioning in frame

Positioning within a frame can draw attention to an important character/object.

the positioning can also be used to indicate relationships between different characters.

Lighting and colour

Lighting & Colour can be used to make lots of different effects such as to highlight important characters or objects in the frame, to make characters look mysterious by shading sections of the face and body or to Reflect a characters mental state/hidden emotions. 

Red - love, passion, violence, danger, anger, power

Pink - innocence, sweetness, femininity, playful, empathy, beauty

Yellow - madness, sickness, obsessive, idyllic, naive

Green - nature, immaturity, corruption, ominous, darkness, danger

Blue - cold, isolation, melancholy, cerebral, passivity, calm

Purple - fantasy, ethereal, eroticism, illusory, mystical, ominous

Orange - warmth, sociability, friendly, happiness, exotic, youth
