Black Mirror, S3, Episode: Nosedive

Equilibrium

The episode starts of with the protagonist, Lacy, giving everybody a good rating, while trying to get a good rating herself. She wants to buy a house but needs a higher rating than she already has, she gets invited to a wedding by her high ranking "friend" which gives her a chance to get a better rating. Her rating starts to go up before the wedding as she starts to do more things people want to see and talking to more higher ranking people, but then when shes about to leave she fights with her brother because he can see how fake she is and that it is not really what she wants. Her rating starts to spiral down while trying to get to the wedding, towards the end she has such a low rating she gets told not to come, she gets to the wedding and gives a very awkward speech which makes her rating go down to 0 she gets removed from the rating system and is genuinely happy that she doesn't have to do anything to be liked.

Characters

Victim - she wants to get a higher rating to fit in, she does things she doesn't really like e.g drinking coffee she doesn't like.

Villain - social rating

False hero - Naomi, Lacy looked up to her, wanted to be like her.

Binary Opposites

control v. panic - Lacy wants to get a good rating and is trying her best to get good ratings, she starts to get bad ratings and can't control it which is making her panic and react in a bad way which is making her rating go down even more.

happy v. sad - Lacy is somewhat happy at the start, is pretty much fake as she is doing things like drink coffee she doesn't like, but other people are going to give her a higher rating for, then when she gets removed from the rating system she is genuinely happy with just herself
